Cannabidiol cbd plant

Guide to Cannabidiol (CBD)

What is CBD?

Cannabidiol or CBD is a non-intoxicating chemical component of the cannabis plant with enormous therapeutic potential. Two kinds of the cannabis sativa plant, hemp and marijuana, produce chemical compounds called cannabinoids. Cannabidiol (CBD) is one type of cannabinoid, but it doesn’t get you high. THC – another cannabinoid – is the psychoactive part of marijuana and does get you high. Most CBD products come from hemp, which must have less than 0.03% THC present.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF CBD?

CBD offers a wide range of potential health benefits and therapeutic uses. CBD is most often used for its potential to provide calm and relaxation. On a chemical level, CBD is known to possess powerful antioxidant properties, which may contribute to reducing inflammation and relieving pain. Ongoing research and study are required to fully understand the potential of the cannabinoids therapeutic effects, but CBD may also help to:

  1. Improve sleep
  2. Soothe stress
  3. Improve mood
  4. Repair and protect skin
  5. Protect the nervous system
  6. Promote a healthy heart

CBD is causing quite a buzz among scientists and health professionals who are seeing patients using CBD-rich products to relieve and treat a wide range of conditions including chronic pain, cancer, arthritis, diabetes, PTSD, cardiovascular disease, epilepsy, anxiety, osteoporosis, and more. Extensive preclinical research and some clinical studies have shown that CBD has strong anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticonvulsant, anti-depressant, anti-psychotic, anti-tumoral, and neuroprotective qualities. Academic research centers in the United States and elsewhere are currently studying the effects of CBD on these and other ailments.

WHERE DOES CBD COME FROM?

CBD is extracted and separated from specific varieties of cannabis, often known as hemp. Chemically, CBD is one of 85 chemical substances known as cannabinoids, which are all found in the cannabis plant. CBD is the second most abundant compound in hemp, typically representing up to 40% of its extracts.

  • CO2 Extraction: Supercritical CO2 extraction is the most gentle approach to extract high quality CBD which retains the naturally occurring beneficial molecules in the hemp plant.
  • Third-Party Lab Tested: Our products are third-party lab tested to ensure consistency and the highest-quality CBD extraction.

How Does CBD Work?

Your body is home to a complex biological system known as the endocannabinoid system. This system was discovered in the early 1990s so it’s a relatively new area of knowledge. It comprises a variety of receptors that trigger physiological reactions, thereby inducing the various effects of cannabinoids.

The two main receptors in the endocannabinoid system are CB1 and CB2. Where THC directly affects these receptors, CBD has a subtler, more indirect approach. Instead of attaching to these receptors, CBD affects how these receptors signal the body and its chemicals. Furthermore, CBD increases the production of the body’s own cannabinoids by blocking the enzymes that can break them down, helping your body use it’s own endocannabinoids more effectively.

Along with its indirect effects on endocannabinoid receptors, CBD also influences other common receptors in the brain and body. This includes the opioid receptors, which play a role in regulating the sensation of pain, and serotonin receptors, which plays an active role in regulating mood.

CBD products are now legal in all 50 states and contain less than 0.03% THC. The Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018, simply known as the Farm Bill, legalized hemp nationwide, which is encouraging for those supporting CBD that is derived from hemp. This is why are seeing a surge of CBD products on the market in 2019 which is why it is important more than ever for consumers to know where their CBD oil is coming from.
