Will Delta-8 Help You Sleep Better?
If you are finding it hard to get to sleep or stay asleep, you’re not alone. Around 70 million Americans experience some sort of sleep disorder, with 30 percent of adults suffering from short-term insomnia.
While lifestyle changes can improve sleep patterns, many of us still struggle to get our prescribed eight hours of shut-eye a night. Luckily, there is a natural way to deal with this common problem.
Enter Delta-8 THC.
What is Delta-8 THC?
Delta-8 THC, short for Delta-8-tetrahydrocannabinol, is a compound extracted from the hemp plant. More specifically, it’s an isomer of Delta-9 THC, a cannabinoid derived from the marijuana plant, which is well-known for its psychoactive effects.
However, since the chemical structure of Delta-8 THC is slightly different from that of Delta-9 THC, the substance is more stable and less psychoactive than its cannabinoid cousin. This means the effects of Delta-8 THC are more mellow, making it perfect for therapeutic purposes such as alleviating anxiety and insomnia.
Is Delta-8 THC Legal?
Delta-8 THC is federally legal in the US under the 2018 Farm Bill, as long as it is derived from hemp and contains no more than 0.3% Delta-9 THC.
Delta-8 THC is also legal in most states.
How Does Delta-8 THC Help You Sleep?
The National Cancer Institute reports that Delta-8 THC has ‘potential antiemetic, anxiolytic, appetite-stimulating, analgesic and neuroprotective activities.’ Delta-8 THC can regulate both the heart rate and breathing. It can also reduce the type of mental activity that prevents us from getting a good night’s rest.
Delta-8 THC is also said to have many other benefits including alleviating pain and nausea, stimulating appetite and protecting nerve cells. Best of all, with Delta-8 THC, you don’t need to be concerned about getting too high since it’s milder than Delta-9 THC.
How Much Delta-8 THC Should I Take to Induce Sleep?
If you have never had cannabis, start at a low dose of Delta-8 for sleep. As a general rule, it’s best to start off with around five milligrams of the cannabinoid and see how your body reacts. You can then increase the dose slightly until you get the desired results. Those who have taken cannabis before may be able to start at a slightly higher dose.
Be sure to consult your doctor if you are taking any other medication.
What Types of Delta-8 THC Products are Available on the Market?
Delta-8 THC is used as a base ingredient in a variety of products. Like other cannabinoids, it can be purchased as an edible, tincture, vape and topical. Oil is great for sublingual application, vapes for fast-acting results and flavored gummies for more discrete consumption.
Delta-8 THC is also available in chocolates, cookies and even shots. Be sure to double check the label prior to purchase to ensure you are getting exactly what you are after.
